2008 AUTOMOBILE Magazine All-Star Awards

America’s leading automotive lifestyle publication, AUTOMOBILE Magazine has announced recently the winners of its 2008 Automobile Magazine All-Stars Awards.

Each year the editors and bureau chiefs of AUTOMOBILE Magazine gathered to test, assess, and debate on the performance, significance as well as the pure enthusiast appeal of the cars that have made the biggest impact in the automotive world. The complete list of the 2008 AUTOMOBILE Magazine All-Star Awards will be featured in the January 2008 issue of the magazine which will available on newsstands by December 4, 2007.

The All-Stars for 2008 were chosen by the AUTOMOBILE Magazine staff, including its worldwide bureau chiefs, and its contributors. The vehicles that were considered for the All-Stars possess the following characteristics:

•    Chevrolet Malibu – The best Chevrolet family sedan AUTOMOBILE Magazine’s staff has ever driven. Smooth, quiet, well-finished and more than able to keep up with more powerful cars, it represents a true sea change in what GM is offering the public. This is the kind of car Americans have wanted from Detroit for years.

•    Infiniti G37/G35 – The yin to the BMW 3-series’ yang. Picking a winner between them—which is to say, choosing the best sport coupe/sedan in the world—is less about what the cars can do than it is about what their drivers want. The interior of the Infiniti is a pleasure dome, but the car’s power is obvious the instant you punch the push-button starter and hear the feral growl of the engine.

•    Porsche Boxster/Cayman – If you’re afraid people will think you bought a Cayman because you can’t afford a 911, we hereby inform you that those people are fools. AAIA Study Shows Car Owners Changing Driving Habits Due to High Prices of Fuel

Basing on the new study conducted by the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) consumers are exerting all efforts to change their driving and vehicle care behaviors especially with fuel prices threatening to reach $4 a gallon.

Six out of ten people surveyed said that their driving behavior has changed due to the increase in gas prices. Still one-third of the motorists surveyed have stated that they would make changes when the price of gasoline reached $3 a gallon while the other 32 percent said that they would change their driving behavior if prices reach $4 a gallon that is according to the result of the survey conducted by Opinion Research Corporation.

And when asked about their driving behavior with the gasoline cost increasing, 90 percent of those surveyed said that they are driving less while 75 percent has stated that they are maintaining their vehicle. The other specific behavioral changes were carpooling more (31 percent), purchasing more fuel efficient vehicles (30 percent) and then making greater use of public transportation (24 percent). Plus in order to save more cost half of the consumers surveyed have revealed that they are capable of performing light maintenance and repair jobs themselves.

The interviews were conducted online wherein 500 people ageing 21 and older have participated. The data was weighed basing on gender, age, and geographic region. The maximum error range is plus or minus four points at a 95 percent confidence level.

Americans Grateful to Japanese Automakers for the Green Technology

Hard as it is to accept but the fact remains that it was the Japanese automakers that popularize the green revolution in the automotive industry. And basing on the recent national poll, Americans do credit the Japanese automakers for the changes in the auto industry.

It no secret that the Japanese automakers lead by Toyota has made environmentally friendly vehicles to be widely available in the US market and basing on the data provided by Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), around 82 percent of Americans believe that the competition from the Japanese automakers is somewhat pressuring Detroit’s Big Three to finally offer hybrid technologies as well as more fuel efficient cars.

The survey also revealed that around 63 percent of Americans say that fuel efficiency would become a big factor in their decision to purchase their next car. At present there are at least 425,000 Americans that help design, build, and sell Japanese-brand vehicles as a matter of fact 63 percent of the Japanese-brand vehicles sold in the US are produced in North America.

Still 86 percent of Americans surveyed also believe that the jobs provided by these Japanese automakers have contributed significantly in the American economy. Meanwhile, 70 percent of the surveyed Americans also believe that a car made in America by Americans is a US product regardless of the brand it bears.

The survey was conducted among 1,013 Americans last September 2007 by Opinion Research Corporation and is included in the new JAMA publication Japanese Automobile Manufacturers: Cars and Trucks for Vibrant America and a Better World.

The brochure contains reviews of current and historical Japanese automaker investment in America and showcase how JAMA member companies are answering the demand for energy-efficient, eco-friendly vehicles in the US market.

Honda Donates $250,000 Pledge and Materials to American Red Cross

Donations for the California wildfires keep coming in and the very recent donation comes from American Honda Motor Co., Inc. that announced a pledge of $250,000 to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Aside from the pledge, American Honda will also be working with California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to assess as well as determine the other needs for emergency assistance materials and resources such Honda-made vehicles, generators, and other products. Honda will donate all these materials as requested.

Tetsuo Iwamura, President of American Honda Motor Co. Inc. said, "The American Red Cross and California Governor's Office of Emergency Services are on the front lines in this tremendous effort to turn back the fires, and Honda salutes their efforts and their dedication."

In addition, to the $250,000 pledge and the donation of materials, Honda will also provide a 100 percent match of any funds donated to the American Red Cross or other applicable organizations by the approximately 7,000 associates of American Honda and its subsidiaries.

And just like Toyota Motor Corporation, Honda has been a partner of American Red Cross in several disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, September 11, California wildfires of 2003 and then again now with the current California wildfires. Honda does not only give cash donations but also materials such as generators and all-terrain vehicles that are used by Red Cross for its relief and rescue operations. In a way this is Honda’s means of thanking back its American buyers.

Ten Road Readiness Tips by AutoSafe Insurance

Britax Child Safety Incorporated to Conduct Safety Recall of Marathon Child Restraint

The Britax Child Safety Incorporated has recently announced that it will conduct a safety recall on its Marathon child restraint with model numbers E9L06, E9W06, and the E906. The recall would cover Marathon Child Restraints produced from May 23, 2006 through July 28, 2006 and with a top tether lot number of KGR 01 A.

In some instances when a child exceeds 50 pounds and the vehicle manufacturer allows the use of top tether above 50 pounds what happen is during impact the top tether hook open up and have the potential to release from the tether anchor. And of course in the event of a crash the child may move forward further than what is normally allowed under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety 213. Luckily there have been no injuries reported pertaining to this issue but of course Britax would not want to that risk especially since the concern here is child safety.

Ten Things Parents Can Do to Keep Their Teen Driver Safe

October is teen driver safety month. To give importance to the said event, the Automobile Club of Southern California is urging parents of teenage drivers as well as soon-to-be drivers to improve their teens’ safety by employing tips from AAA’s new list of “Ten Things Parents Can Do to Keep Their Teen Driver Safe”. AAA is exerting all its efforts to promote the list as part of its annual national Teen Driver Safety Week which will run form October 15 to 20. For the past years statistics have shown that automobile crashes are the leading cause of death among teens.

According to Kathy Downing, the Manager of the Auto Club’s Driver Services, "Parents can have a tremendous impact on their teens' safety. Teen Driver Safety Week provides an opportunity for parents to focus on teen driver safety and take practical steps that can reduce teen driver crashes. AAA created a list of ten things parents can do to help keep their teen drivers safe all year long."

Here are the Ten Things Parents Can Do to Keep Their Teen Driver Safe:

•    Try to know and understand your teens—meaning not because your neighbor’s 16 year old son or daughter is driving their own car, your teenager who is of the same age should also do the same. Remember not all teens having the same age means that they are equally matured and responsible to take on driving. Let us not forget that driving is not a game it is risky and dangerous which may lead to death.

•    Be a positive influence and role model—as the old adage goes children lives by their parents example so be careful on your actions especially when your are driving always observe road courtesy. Be a defensive driver. The research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has found out that teens that are involved in collisions and tickets are likely to have parents with similar driving records. The same goes with teens that are collision and ticket-free, they have parents with the same clean driving records.

•    Choose a driving school—it is always best to get driving instructions from the experts. However be choosy, select only those driving schools that feature a high degree of interaction and instructors with more than the minimum amount of state-mandated training are recommended. It is also important to choose a driving school that encourages parents’ participation.

•    Practice, practice…and more practice—it is very important that after the driving school parents would follow up on the driving progress of their teens. It is also highly recommended for parents to supervise their teens on their early driving experience.

•    Keep teen drivers free of teen passengers and if possible don’t let them drive at night—basing on research conducted on teen fatalities, it was found out that teen passengers can increase pressure on teen drivers to drag race or to speed up more than the usual leading to crashing accidents. And with regards to driving at night, research also shows that teen crash rates are high at night and often occurs between 9 pm and midnight.

•    Make sure that you teens have enough sleep—this does not only encourage growth but also keep them well rested and therefore more alert when driving. Lack of sleep can affect vision, hand-eye coordination, reaction time and judgment. If you feel that your teen is exhausted better be the one to drive them to school or to anywhere they would like to go.

•    Driving distractions were also found out to be the cause of teen driver fatalities--and by distractions it includes cell phones and text messaging. The estate of California has recently banned cell phone use by new teen drivers and for parents also it is recommended to impose this as a strict rule.

•    Create a parent-teen driving agreement—it is important to set rules, conditions, restrictions, and consequences of teens’ driving in a written form. This will give the impression that you are serious about them following the agreement or they will lose the privilege to drive. Also in cases when teens broke family driving rules these should be used as an opportunity for learning and discussion. And of course if your teen has practiced proper driving behavior they should also be rewarded with additional liberties.

•    Schedule each week for family discussion and review—It is vital to let your teens know just how involved you are and how concern you are on their driving. Set a time each week to tackle issues and concerns while reviewing the teen’s driving performance and chart driving progress.

•    Buy a safe vehicle for your teens—meaning vehicles that are loaded with safety features such as front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control systems. The type of vehicle you purchase is vital to your teen’s safety since it may help to reduce or aggravate injuries or damages in times of accidents.

Lucky Fans Drive Home a Soprano Porsche Cayenne SUV

Two lucky Sopranos fans’ finally get the chance to drive home the actual Porsche Cayenne SUV Carmela Soprano drove through the streets of her New Jersey suburb on the hit drama “The Sopranos”. The Porsche Cayenne SUV was put in auction at the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation’s 12th Annual Grand Slam for Children.

Last weekend in Las Vegas, the Cayenne was the must-have item up for auction during the Grand Slam which is one of the city’s biggest entertainment and fundraising nights of the year. There were also celebrities that performed at the event namely Tony Bennett, Kelly Clarkson, Hall & Oates, Matchbox Twenty, Carlos Santana and Jerry Seinfield to name a few.

Richard and Theresa Beauchamp from Steamboat Springs, Colorado placed the winning bid on the Porsche Cayenne which reaches $90,000. And to conclude the bidding, the auctioneer Jack Williams added $10,000 bringing the cost of the Porsche Cayenne to $100,000. The Porsche Cayenne that the Beauchamps’ won comes complete with a bronze plaque bearing the signatures of the show’s Emmy award-winning stars James Gandolfini and Edie Falco.

The Porsche Cayenne SUV that was put in auction was a 2005 model Cayenne S in Prosecco with Sand Beige interior, powered by 4.5 liter V8 engine with an automatic climate control and dual front passenger settings and a 350-watt,14-speaker Bose stereo. It only has 6,758 miles on the odometer.

Andre Agassi was so happy with the turnout of the auction that he was quoted by The Auto Channel as saying: "I am grateful that there are so many people dedicated to helping kids. I’m thrilled with the turnout from the public, the generosity of our sponsors, donors and bidders, and the commitment and talent of the performers who so graciously give their time to the Grand Slam. It was one of the greatest nights of the year."

The Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation (AACF) was founded in 1994 by former professional tennis player Andre Agassi. The objective of the Foundation is to provide recreational as well as educational opportunities for at-risk children in Southern Nevada.

Hands-Free Text Messaging Soon to be Offered

High-tech car technologies that are geared in making driving easier, safe, and comfortable are now being offered by various carmakers. The latest of these technologies include the hands-free call which enables drivers to make calls obviously without having the need to dial manually but did you know that texts messages can now be send without touching a single button on your mobile?

Believe it or not it’s possible and it’s through the efforts of Microsoft and the voice recognition expert Nuance. These two companies are developing highly advanced kit that will have the capability of translating speech into SMS even while the car is on the move and it could even be made to process E-mail.

The software is expected to arrive early next year and is to be installed in the latest Mercedes C-Class called the COMAND APS. This system has a multimedia center that can decipher incoming texts and allows sat-nav destinations to be entered verbally. The device can also select music from CD or MP3 in the same way and can distinguish between individual musical styles and band names. Ford models that are sold in the US can also use this system and according to the spokesman of the Detroit-based automaker, it is also considering offering the system for its UK market.

2008 Ford Mustang Named Five-Star Safety Vehicle

Ford’s top-selling convertible, the Mustang was recently named a five-star safety vehicle by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after it has passed with flying colors the New Car Assessment Program that includes crash testing and rollover resistance tests specifically driver and passenger front crash safety, side impact safety for driver and rear driver-side passenger, and rollover resistance.

The new Mustang also obtained high ratings in side-impact performance by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Ford Safety Director Jim Vondale was very pleased with the results and said that it’s in line with the company’s own testing results. He said, "The Mustang convertible is another example of working at all levels to offer a vehicle that is both sporty and safe. It was developed with a dedicated focus on safety, making it the highest rated Mustang ever built."

The safety features included in the 2008 Mustang include standard air bags, seat-mounted thorax side air bags, and Ford’s very own Personal Safety System which is a comprehensive restraint system that function by determining the severity of a crash. According to Ford the NHTSA and IIHS has considered the Personal Safety System is a significant life-saving technology.

Mercedes AMG Model To Hit Dealerships in 2008

Mercedes Benz has released the newest AMG model in the product lineup, the C 63 AMG, based from the German automaker's luxurious C-Class sedan model. Mercedes Benz will offer two variations for the C 63 AMG: Saloon and Estate. Both variants will go on sale in Europe and other markets beginning in 2008 carrying a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of 67,235 Euros for the Saloon and 69,853 for the Estate version.

Moreover, both the C 63 AMG Saloon and Estate will feature the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine. This powertrain unit can generate 336 kW / 457 hp and develop a maximum torque output of 600 Nm. With this engine, the Mercedes Benz C 63 AMG can sprint from a stand still from up to 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds, reaching an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The engine also offer fuel economy and reduced exhaust emissions, thanks to the high performance catalytic converter, which allows the engine to comply with EU 4 and LEV-II emissions standards.

The Chrysler brand has launched last Sept. 24 on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” its new campaign ad for the all-new 2008 Chrysler Town & Country.

The all-new 2008 Chrysler Town & Country features Swivel n’ Go™ seating and storage system, SIRIUS™ Backseat TV and MyGIG™ multimedia system --- these features are intended to enhance family time and keep everyone comfortable, safe, and entertained.

The campaign with theme “Engineered Beautifully” also helps to reflect the style and technology of Chrysler brand products. David Rooney, Director of Chrysler brand was quoted by theautochannel.com as saying: "When it comes to the all-new Chrysler Town & Country, it’s not just about the driver, it’s about the whole family with features that provide a first class experience in every seat. Negotiation Between GM And UAW Ended In A Strike

The United Auto Workers were on strike against General Motors despite the fact that the two parties are still in negotiation. The primary cause of the strike is job security specifically for GM plants located in Fairfax, Kansas; Spring Hill, Tennessee; and the Lordstown, Ohio---these are the very same plants without any future product planned that is according to Edmunds’ Auto Observer.

Senior Michelle Krebs, Edmunds’ Auto Observer Senior Editor also commented that: "A strike is good for no one: not for GM, the UAW, the Detroit area and other GM towns, nor the global economy. But, the economy and car market are relatively soft, and GM has a reasonable stockpile of inventory – companywide, the average is 87 days’ worth, above the industry norm of 60-65 days."

A strike is not something that GM needs right now especially with some of its models gaining sales momentum. Philip Reed, Consumer Advice Editor for Edmunds.com also said, "Those planning to buy a GM vehicle should act quickly before the inventory dwindles down and negotiations become challenging as demand exceeds supply."

The effect of the strike reaches Canada and Reuters has reported that there is the possibility that 100,000 Canadian workers could be laid off by the end of this week if the strike at General Motors’ US operations continues.

CAW President Buzz Hargrove said in a televised news conference that around 80,000 to 100,000 employees in the Canadian auto sector could be laid off and that includes 40,000 employees from parts manufacturers that supply GM.

Mr. Hargrove said, "To put it into perspective, we have about 80,000 workers in Canada that work in the automotive parts sector and General Motors buys about 50 percent of all automotive parts that are manufactured in Canada. You can expect up to 40,000 auto parts workers to be laid off in the next three days."

There would also be around 17,000 direct employees at General Motors in Canada that may be affected if the strike continues. He also added, "So, it's not inconceivable that by the end of this week, we could have between 80,000 to 100,000 people unemployed, mostly in Ontario, some in Quebec, as a result of the dispute between General Motors and the United Auto Workers in the United States."

Currently GM has two car plants and one truck plant in Oshawa, Ontario, a transmission plant in Windsor, Ontario, and engine and components plant in St. Catherines, Ontario, a parts and distribution plant in Woodstock, Ontario, and joint venture facility with Suzuki Motor Corp. in Ingersoll, Ontario---all these are to be affected by the strike as a matter of fact, the transmission plant in Windsor has closed down after the strike began.

GM Plans of Building a Wholly Owned Research Center in China

China Business News has reported recently that GM plans of building a wholly owned research center in China and at the same time will tie up with FAW Group for the very first time to produce commercial vehicles.

Analysts see this move of General Motors as part of its aggressive development in China and also gives a hints of its strained relationship with its present sole Chinese partner, SAIC which is has recently rolled out its self-branded models.

If realized the new wholly owned engineering center of GM would become the sixth of its kind globally. The Shanghai-based newspaper also added that the Detroit-based automaker would benefit immensely from the lower research and development costs from the new engineering center.

The report further stated that it is also highly probable that a new venture would be formed with FAW Group, China’s leading commercial vehicle maker.

In an email sent by GM to China Business News, the automaker has stated: "Along these lines a number of different options are being explored, but at this stage we are not ready to make any announcement." However, Gao Yuan, a communications official from FAW Group has said that he is not aware of that.

An unnamed industrial analyst who used to work for GM was quoted by the China Business News as saying: "GM is not competitive in the commercial vehicle segment worldwide. A strategic alliance would help to speed up the development. But it is still hard to form one in a short period."

With regards to the R&D center, the analyst also said that it could help in growing GM’s ambition in China especially in growing sales volume. GM’s new venture is also regarded by the analyst as the automaker’s defensive move against its current Chinese partner that is already launching self-branded models.

SAIC has two ventures with GM and is now investing heavily in developing models that would carry its own name plate. The very first model of SAIC that was launched in the market has designs that were purchased from former British Rover Corp last 2005.

Chrysler?s Jeep J8 Multipurpose Vehicle

Chrysler LLC has recently unveiled its Jeep J8 multipurpose vehicle at the 2007 Defense Systems & Equipment International (DSEi) military trade show which simply goes to show that the iconic Jeep is once again available for enlistment in military service.

Thomas Hausch, Vice President-International Sales, Chrysler LLC was quoted at a press release at worldcarfans.com as saying: "Jeep vehicles made their original debut in 1941 for military duty, and have built their reputation with more than 65 years as the world’s benchmark for off-road capability and versatility for civilian and military vehicles. The new Jeep J8 marks the brand’s return to vehicle production for military and civilian government use – the same capability that makes the Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited famous also makes the Jeep J8 a truly multipurpose vehicle."

Jeep engineers have made use of the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited as its base for creating a Jeep with more capability and versatility. The structure of the Wrangler Unlimited was reinforced for increase off-road performance and to accommodate greater payloads up to a maximum of 1,339kg or 2,952 lbs.

Every components of the Jeep J8 including axles, brakes, and suspension are specifically designed to tackle demanding military and civilian government use. The J8’s Command-Trac® four-wheel drive system enables maximum versatility and performance both in on- and off- road conditions.
